Carmen Taylor is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in VA with over two decades of clinical experience providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed therapy to individuals, couples, and families. Throughout her career, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings, helping clients navigate life's challenges, heal from painful experiences, strengthen relationships, and achieve meaningful, lasting change.

Carmen has extensive experience working with individuals who are navigating trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, addiction, relationship difficulties, and significant life transitions. Her work recognizes the profound impact that past experiences, family dynamics, and relational patterns can have on emotional well-being and daily functioning. Through an individualized and collaborative approach, she helps clients develop greater self-awareness, build resilience, establish healthy boundaries, and cultivate effective strategies for managing life's challenges.

A central focus of Carmen's practice is couples and relationship therapy. She works with partners experiencing communication difficulties, emotional disconnection, trust concerns, intimacy challenges, infidelity, conflict, and relationship transitions. Her practice is inclusive and affirming of diverse relationship structures, including monogamous, polyamorous, consensually non-monogamous, and other nontraditional partnerships. Carmen provides a nonjudgmental therapeutic environment where partners can explore their needs, strengthen emotional connections, navigate complex relationship dynamics, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Carmen also specializes in family therapy, helping families address longstanding conflicts, intergenerational patterns, relational trauma, communication challenges, and difficulties navigating changing family roles and boundaries. Drawing upon a family systems perspective, she works collaboratively with family members to foster understanding, improve communication, strengthen connections, and promote healthier family functioning.

Trauma-informed care is foundational to Carmen's clinical approach. She recognizes that traumatic experiences can influence an individual's sense of safety, self-worth, emotional regulation, and capacity to form and maintain meaningful relationships. Her therapeutic work emphasizes emotional safety, empowerment, collaboration, and an understanding of how trauma may manifest within individuals, couples, and family systems. She helps clients explore the connection between past experiences and present challenges while supporting the development of healthier coping strategies and more fulfilling relationships.

Throughout her career, Carmen has worked extensively with LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, and families, active-duty military personnel, veterans, and individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Her volunteer experiences in South Africa and Mexico have further enriched her appreciation for cultural differences and reinforced her commitment to providing inclusive, affirming, and culturally sensitive care.

As a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), Carmen utilizes an integrative therapeutic approach that incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Strengths-Based Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. She thoughtfully tailors her interventions to each client's unique experiences, strengths, needs, and therapeutic goals.

Carmen believes that healing and personal growth are possible when individuals feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported. Whether working with an individual seeking greater emotional well-being, partners hoping to strengthen their relationship, or a family navigating difficult transitions, she strives to create a collaborative, affirming, and supportive space where clients can gain insight, foster meaningful connections, and move toward healthier, more fulfilling lives.
